Alberta's Consultation Policy

The Government of Alberta's First Nations Consultation Policy on Land Management and Resource Development was approved by Cabinet on May 16, 2005.

The Policy states that "Alberta will consult with First Nations where land management and resource development on provincial Crown land may infringe First Nations Rights and Traditional Uses."

Alberta's Aboriginal Policy Framework

In September 2000, the Government of Alberta released Strengthening Relationships, the Government of Alberta’s Aboriginal Policy Framework.

The Aboriginal Policy Framework document outlines the provincial government’s policy on Aboriginal issues and guides Alberta’s relations with Aboriginal people with two specific goals in mind:

to improve the social and economic opportunities for Aboriginal Albertans; and,
to clarify the responsibilities of federal, provincial and Aboriginal governments and communities.
To achieve these goals provincial ministries have examined their Aboriginal policies, exchanged information on Aboriginal issues and have co-ordinated their efforts on cross-ministry initiatives.
