Bioenergy

Stimulating bioenergy (ethanol, biodiesel, biogas) development in Alberta is the focus of the Nine Point Bioenergy Plan.  This biorefining energy plan encompasses new program initiatives and addresses policy resolutions to help with market access and stability.  Bioenergy is the first step in a much larger vision of creating high value products through a biorefining approach to agriculture and forestry biomass integrated with our energy sector.  Read more

Coal and Mineral Development manages the exploration and extraction of Alberta's solid minerals - coal, metallic minerals, salt, diamonds, ammonite shell and various stone and rock resources such as gravel and limestone. In Alberta's electricity market, competitive forces - the laws of supply and demand - guide decisions by developers regarding investments in new generation and the delivery system. To ensure Albertans of a long-term, reliable supply of competitively priced electricity the Electricity branch develops and monitors the framework for encouraging competitive electricity markets and efficient delivery systems. Read more

Natural Gas

Natural gas is one of the cleanest and cheapest sources of energy. Alberta Energy ensures Albertans continue to receive the full value from their gas resource by promoting and encouraging responsible exploration and development of Alberta’s natural gas resources, and calculating and collecting gas royalties. Read more

Oil

The conventional oil sector has been a driver of the Alberta economy for more than 50 years it will continue to play an important role in the future.  Alberta energy promotes and encourages exploration and development of reserves, calculates and collects royalties from producers and markets Crown's share of crude oil production through private sector marketing agents. Read more

Oil Sands

Alberta’s oil sands are abundant, accessible, and affordable sources of crude oil, and are attracting global attention. The Oil Sands Operations Division facilitates the development of Alberta’s oil sands and manages the Crown’s interest in oil sands, including land tenure and royalty programs, on behalf of all Albertans. The Division also works with other departments and industry towards the resolution of business and strategic issues. Read more

Tenure

Tenure is the process of leasing and administering petroleum and natural gas (P&NG) rights owned by the Province of Alberta. Companies are granted the right to explore for and develop P&NG resources, in exchange for the value to Albertans that flows from development in the form of royalties, bonus bid payments and rents. Read more
