The following list represents the general categories of careers in the Department of Energy: Administration Officer This work primarily involves senior administrative services where the administration is integral to the efficient operation of program delivery, or represents the highest level of administering program services. These positions are typically viewed as administrative professionals. For those positions with the requirement for technical knowledge of a subject area, i.e., program specialists; the knowledge is applied in administering the program operation. Administrative Support Administration Support work ranges from entry level administration to those performing senior level administrative functions such as office coordination/supervision. Typical work includes secretarial and office support and/or providing one or more core administrative support services such as records management, finance (accounting), purchasing, human resources, etc. Auditor The Auditor independently performs professional compliance auditing under the authority of the Mines and Minerals Act and related Regulations. Utilizing professional judgement, the Auditor is involved in both the selection of the sample of audits to be performed from the total potential audits and the specific risk areas to be audited for each company that is selected. The Auditor examines client source documents to verify the completeness and accuracy of royalty submissions in various specialty areas. The Auditor develops and utilizes innovative methods to maximize audit efficiency and cost effectiveness. The incumbent identifies filing problems and policy issues and assists in the development and implementation of appropriate solutions. Budget Officer Professional review, analysis and forecasting of expenditure and revenue data. Engineering and Related (includes Engineer and Geologist) The geologists provide technical consultation and advice to the department for non-renewable resource delineation and development matters. The position is responsible for the technical evaluation of industry submissions to support various applications made under the Mines and Minerals Act and related regulations. The effective utilization of Crown resources and the optimization of revenues to the Crown particularly from oil and gas are the main focus of the position. The work is done using accepted geological principles and professional practices and standards. The Engineer helps the senior engineers ensure all oil sands projects are correctly defined for new approval or amendments under the Oil Sands Royalty Regulation, 1997. The position will assist in ensuring that effective business processes are in place to respond to the needs of the oil sands industry and related regulations. The position also works with senior engineers responsible to determine if the claimed costs are directly attributable to the royalty project. The position will learn to determine if the cost is allowed and how reasonable the costs are. Executive Support Executive support positions provide administrative support to Assistant Deputy Ministers or Deputy Ministers. Finance (Financial Analyst) Human Resource Consultant Professional consulting in the human resource management field includes the administration of Human Resources policies or programs. Human Resource Consultants coordinate recruitment activities with the program areas, conduct job evaluation, deal with employee issues, and participate in corporate initiatives such as attraction and retention, building capacity, and workforce planning. Information Technology (includes Business Analyst and Systems Analyst) Under the guidance of a Team Lead this position works within government, departmental and divisional information technology guidelines, policies, procedures and practices to undertake specific systems applications projects. The incumbent provides technical consulting with other team members and customer staff as appropriate as well as applications development, maintenance and enhancement support to the department's automated applications. Read More (Systems Analyst) Legal Counsel Legal counsel work performed within Alberta Justice and Attorney General requiring membership in the Law Society of Alberta. Program Services (includes Planning Officer, Research Officer and Economist) The Planning Officer works primarily in a team environment with other branch staff, government departments, industry and environmental organizations and industry stakeholders. The incumbent must have a thorough understanding of relevant issues and strong communication and negotiation skills as these positions manage projects and ensure that sensitive or difficult issues are referred to the Manager. The Planning Officer also provides input and advice to the Manager and Executive Director on a broad range of issues, projects and policies. The Economist is responsible for providing economic analysis and forecasts on supply and/or demand for specific energy and petroleum resources. The Economist monitors market developments in a particular sector of energy supply and demand and is the key first-line analyst for relevant issues. Research work involves adapting and using appropriate research methodologies, analyzing data and statistics, using economic modeling and managing economic databases. Technologies (includes Mapping Technologist and GIS Technologist) The Technologist is a member of the custom GIS Mapping and Graphic Services team. This position oversees the preparation of custom GIS mapping projects and specialized analyses for clients within the department and must be able to make independent decisions. The Technologist is also responsible for the capture and management of data layers. The incumbent must keep abreast with GIS technology to be able to perform complex technical work in support of the creation, conversion, loading and extraction of departmental spatial data. Manager This work involves supervision and direction of professional, technical and/or administrative staff in the delivery of program services. Statutory or unique requirements may dictate specific qualifications. For example, working in an audit or finance field would require a recognized professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA) , or a degree in a related post-secondary field (Commerce, Business, Economics), along with related work experience. Senior and Executive Managers This work involves supervision and direction of managerial, professional, technical and/or administrative staff in the delivery of program services. The senior manager classification requires a related degree and a minimum of six years progressively responsible related work experience. Depending on the statutory or unique requirements of the position, specific qualifications may apply. Strategic leadership, staff development, project management, and highly developed communication skills are a pre-requisite for any position at this level. |
