A reliable supply of electricity in our homes and where we work. It’s an essential part of our everyday lives.

To meet that need, Alberta must add critical new electricity transmission infrastructure.

As identified in the Provincial Energy Strategy, the Government of Alberta is taking action to substantially upgrade the transmission system. The first step was the introduction of Bill 50 in the Legislature on June 1, 2009.

Bill 50, the Electric Statutes Amendment Act, 2009 proposes that the Government of Alberta take on the responsibility of approving the need for critical transmission infrastructure projects. This is no different than the government approving other publicly needed infrastructure such as highways, schools and hospitals.

Albertans will still be able to provide input on where specific transmission lines are located. That is the job of the Alberta Utilities Commission, which holds open, public hearings into proposed transmission lines. That will not change.
