The Gas Markets and Utilities Business Unit (GMU) provides advice to the Minister of Energy regarding the competitive natural gas market in North America, and natural gas supplied to Albertans, including regulated utility service, customer choice and gas rebates. Currently, GMU is managing a cross-government regulatory review and external consultation concerning the development of Coalbed Methane (CBM). This business unit is also responsible for market analysis and forecasting the price of natural gas for the provincial budget, to ensure Albertans can benefit to the greatest extent from resources development.

The Gas Development Business Unit is responsible for the administration and design of Alberta’s gas royalty framework. This includes calculating, invoicing and collecting natural gas royalties. The Unit evaluates Alberta’s business climate for natural gas development, to ensure Albertans receive fair value from the development of their natural gas resources.
