The SAWG was established in March 2004 and has representatives from a cross-section of stakeholder organizations.  A series of meetings were held in order to address coalbed methane/natural gas in coal (CBM/NGC) issues that have the potential to impact the land surface, well density, impact on humans and animals, air issues and noise.

The SAWG presented their findings to the CBM/NGC Multi-stakeholder Advisory Committee (the MAC), who is responsible for overseeing the consultation process.
