Innovative Energy Technologies Programs
On this page

The Provincial Energy Strategy includes an innovation component that recognizes the need for energy related research, technology and innovation. The Innovative Energy Technologies Program (IETP) is a major component supporting this strategy. The IETP was announced in June 2004 to support innovative technology development that would further the production of Alberta conventional oil, in situ oil sands and gas resources leading to additional recoverable reserves and royalties while improving environmental performance over current processes. The program is also designed to assist industry in finding commercial technical solutions to the gas over bitumen issue that will allow efficient and orderly production of both resources. It is anticipated that successful technologies supported by this program will enhance resource recovery and increase royalties to fully recover, over time, the costs of the program.
Successful applicants in the program are provided with royalty adjustments up to a maximum of 30% of approved project costs. Industry must provide the remaining 70% or more of total project costs. The total industry/government commitment to important new technologies, assuming full subscription of the program, will be at least $667 million.
Applications are no longer being accepted.
Annual reports, prepared and submitted by approved projects, will soon be posted starting with records from 2005.
