New projects are being added every year and production is expected to increase from 1.9 million barrels per day in 2012 to 3.8 million barrels per day in 2022, keeping pace with demand and providing a sound economic basis for the future.

The Oil Sands Division of Alberta Energy provides administrative and regulatory services for Oil Sands Royalty Regulations, Oil Sands Tenure Regulation, and Crown and individual agreements to ensure that appropriate royalties and rentals are calculated and collected for the benefit of the people of Alberta.
Daily operations include administration of public offerings, agreements, rent, as well as review and approval of applications for oil sands projects, monitoring existing operations, economic impact assessments, development of business rules and royalty revenue forecasts. The Division maintains a staff of analysts, administrators, engineers, economists and business experts to ensure the people of Alberta are compensated fairly for this important natural resource.
