Zone Designation Legend and Log Look Up

Zone Designations (ZDs) were created in the early 1950s for the Department of Energy’s natural gas leases and describe specific intervals or zones proven capable of producing gas in paying quantities. The name of the ZD generally describes the productive interval included in it.  More importantly, the interval on the log specified in the ZD describes the rights held by the natural gas lessee. The DOE has consistently used the defined depth interval in a ZD as an exclusive means of identifying the mineral rights granted in mineral agreements.  (Information Letter 1998-14) 

Resource Land Access has compiled a pdf library of the logs associated with currently active ZDs.  These files can be viewed using Acrobat Reader.

Note 1: Log Annotation Guide: For each ZD type well log, the interval is annotated with blue, and indicated further by an arrow within the interval. All other specified tops were provided on the ERCB database, and marked by a red line. For consistency, all depth numbers were recorded in red.
