Resource Land Access
The Resource Land Access Business Unit provides a number of resource planning, technical geological and engineering, and advanced mapping and data services within the Department of Energy, and to other government ministries such as Sustainable Resource Development, Environment and Community Development.
Land Access and Development group provides resource-planning support to minimize conflicts related to access to mineral rights owned by Albertans (the Crown) and to support resource developers in gaining surface access to those minerals below. Land Access typically applies to areas where surface access may be significantly affected because of an environmental or land use concern.
Geology and Engineering area provides technical geological and engineering consulting expertise internally within the department on a broad range of technical matters that involve the effective management of the Crown’s mineral resources. The group interprets geological and engineering data, submitted by companies to ensure for example, that mineral rights remain productive; that the Crown receives only its’ fair share of the resource in production sharing agreements involving crown and freehold mineral interests. Technical support is provided for petroleum and natural gas, oil sands, coal, metallic and industrial minerals and long-term resource planning decision-making.
GIS Mapping and Data Services produces a wide range of GIS mapping products, high quality presentation material, processes mineral accretion applications, provides expertise in resolving situations where mineral ownership is unclear, and co-ordinates and manages GIS datasets
