Guideline for Prospectors

Samples and Maps in Mineral Assessment Reports

Maps

Maps are typically included in reports on prospecting to illustrate the following:

  • Traverse line locations. Not just the area explored, but the exploration route.
  • Sampling locations, with reference to the Sample I.D.
  • Location of outcrops and other significant landforms described in report.
Criteria for maps pertaining to prospecting activity and findings:
  • Remember to include two original copies of each map.
  • Map scale should be 1:50,000 or better.
  • The quality of the map must be suitable for reproducing.
  • Mechanically produced maps are preferred.
  • Hand-written notations and markings must be of suitable quality to reproduce.

Samples

1. Sample I.D.
Each sample must be identified with a unique code or number, to be used on all sample descriptions, analytical certificates and sample analysis reporting.

2. Sample Description
Describing the sample completely and accurate adds value to results and ensures they are reproducible, i.e., the same results would be obtained by someone else under exactly the same conditions (same place, same time, same method, etc.)

Where you obtained the sample:

  • UTM, MTS, Alberta Land Survey or Military Grid coordinates; and
  • Associated significant land forms and/or geological formations.
  • Map sampling locations (see below)
    • When you obtained the sample: date and/or trip number referenced in your report.
    • How you obtained the sample: e.g., panning, rock grab.
    • How much you obtained in each sample, by weight or volume.
    • What you obtained:
    • Description of mineral, chemical and physical characteristics of sample, to the best of your ability; and/or
    • Certified analysis or assay results obtained during the work assessment period. All lab results should be referenced to the Sample I.D.

    Example of Sample Description

    Sample Location
ID # When Collected Method Description* Easting (UTM) Northing (UTM) Notes
01XX03 July 20, 2000 Panning - 5 mm screen Amt: 1 kg Fine gray silt mixed with approxomately 25% black particles. 379406 6086179 750 m downstream from Muskrat Falls
9DC7B56 April 17, 2000 Rock Grab Amt: 10 kg Granite-like, dark gray with approx 20% by volume pink flecks; 25% by volume black flecks. 374225 6086035 200 m east of esker

*Preliminary description only. Subject to confirmation and further analysis by a geology professional
